Waste Free Christmas
It’s that time of year again and whilst many retail stores are filling windows with decorations, Bendigo Eco Living Centres window is up for a different kind of treatment. Verity is presenting a workshop on Christmas without the Waste on Thursday the 17th of December at Allan's Walk EcoLiving Centre.
Fun and fancy as they may be Christmas decorations are a luxury many of us take for granted. How many people have bought Christmas decorations only to replace them with newer trendier ones in a few years time? Or simply forgot to bring our decorations with us last time we moved house because they were stashed up the top of a cupboard somewhere? Yeah you know what I’m talking about.
The theme for the Allan's Walk EcoLiving Centre Christmas window was “Waste Free Christmas”. The fallen gum tree branch was found by the roadside

To add a bit of bling I made the aluminium can leaves following instructions from a great little website and I needed something to sit it in so I took a trip to the Eaglehawk recycle centre where I found a rusty old preserving pan which looked like it would do the trick.
Like the little bowerbird I am I then flew back to my nest to see what I could use for decorations. Instead of baubles I used pom poms made from used plastic bags. Much to my delight I had a difficult time finding them!! The Hanging tree ornaments were cut from used magazine covers
As I’m such an environmental nut I like to put animals in their natural habitats so sorry no reindeers in this Christmas tree folks! You got owls instead. They were made from scrap fabrics and stuffed with wool stuffing made from recycled jumpers.

The flags were also made from scrap fabrics as they are not particularly Christmas themed can be used as decoration all year round. The stockings were all made from scrap and vintage fabrics found in op shops. Which by the way have huge amounts of preloved Christmas decorations really cheap if you don’t want to make them yourself!!
