Transport
Four factors are combining that are changing transport forever.
1. The International Energy Agency have now put a date to peak oil: 2020. Beyond that time the amount of oil we pull from the ground will grow less every year. Petrol has a limited lifespan.
2. Climate Change is here and it is pretty clear that we need to think beyond fossil fuels and quickly.
3. The car is anti people. It makes us sick (urban air pollution), it makes us unhealthy (we used to walk/ride), it cuts us off from our communities (studies show that the more cars on the street the less friends we have), it has led us to live in the back half of our houses (we move away from the noise), it is designed for landfill (precious metals on a one way trip), it is polluting the atmosphere (carbon dioxide), it makes us mad (road rage), it kills (over 300 Victorians die each year on the roads) and the fuel source causes war (Iraq).
Cars also cost us around $10,000 a year to own and run. Cities around the world are now being redesigned for human connection, health and local economies.
4. The people are voting with their wallets and their feet, pedals and bus tickets to change the system. They are doing this because there is a growing understanding of the other three points made above. Public transport, cycling and walking are all experiencing massive growth in Australian cities.
This section contains information on cars, public transport, walking and a section on a car free city.
