Food in Season : a fantastic resource put together by BREAZE

BREAZE wonder-volunteer Bridget O'Sullivan is creating a brand new food resource for members! Bridget will provide us with insights to planting, harvesting and cooking good, local, seasonal food. We're starting off with late Autumn (yep, it's winter already, so we're releasing this one a little late, but there's heaps of great, relevant info!).

Our food choices are responsible for as much as 37% of our ecological footprint. Where the food you eat comes from, how it is grown and the way it is processed and packaged all contribute to this overall impact. Eating food when it is in season tastes better. It also reduces the likelihood that it has been flown from the other side of the world to meet consumer demand for food all year round – in and out of season. Eating local, seasonal food is good for our community and our environment.

The good news is we eat everyday, which means every day is an opportunity to make a difference... so to all you eaters out there, the time has come to eat our way to a better future!

So what should be on your menu in late Autumn? Why not try potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, chestnuts, apples, raspberries, figs, pears, rhubarb, mandarins, oranges (are they within our 100 miles?) to name a few.

Want to find out more about what to eat when, how to cook it and where to buy it? Visit our Local Food Blog where you, the eater, will find information to make better choices. You will find information on the fresh produce that is in season locally. We will also be sharing recipes that both taste good and are kind to the environment in which we live.

For those gardeners out there, we haven’t forgotten you - there is more to come! We will also be tapping into the wealth of local information in our region to give a reminder of what to plant and when in our Ballarat climate. Check out what's happening in the O'Sullivan's garden and learn some great recipes including Eggplant Parmagiana and Couscous with Goat’s cheese, pumpkin and macadamias.
